Security for Turin underground – new contract for Funkwerk plettac

  • Extension of existing video monitoring system for around €1.5m
  • Positive experience since 2006 Winter Olympics
  • Turin once again pioneer in cutting-edge digital security technology for local public transport in Italy

Fürth/Turin, September 30, 2010. Security at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin was a major issue. One of the flagship projects in this context was the new, driverless underground train in Italy’s northern metropolis. A new type of digital video monitoring system with image recording and automatic analysis both in the trains and at the stations had raised the security standard to the highest level. The operator, GTT (Gruppo Torinesi Trasporti), has since had such positive experience with it that the system will now be extended. The system supplier, then and now, is Funkwerk plettac.

As the existing CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) system, its extension will also send images via WLAN from the driving underground train to the operator’s control centre. These are recorded both there and in the train. The extended system will also include cameras to monitor tunnels, stops and stations. These cameras, as the other IP components, will be supplied by Funkwerk.

The central component of the system is the video management system p.o.s.a., in which all information is collected and processed. One of the remarkable features of the current version of Funkwerk plettac’s established management system, first introduced at the 2010 “Security” trade fair, is an enhanced level of user friendliness, system performance and stability.

Real-time image transfer at 80km/h

A key technological challenge in the wireless transfer of images from the vehicles in Turin is the closeness of the stations (every 500m on average) and the significant bends in the route sections. Furthermore, at speeds of up to 80km/h, the real-time images transferred at maximum definition from the trains to the operations control centre need to be smooth without blurring.

Funkwerk plettac’s system has proven its efficiency here in daily use. Now, the six new stations of Turin’s underground are to be integrated into the system. The new contract for Funkwerk plettac is worth around €1.5 million. A further extension of the video monitoring system, however, is already planned.

Futureproof system solution

GTT is the pioneer in Italy in the equipment of stations and local trains with digital video and wireless monitoring technology. The first stretch (Line 1) provided with security technology from Funkwerk plettac was opened in 2006 and covers a distance of ten kilometres, including 15 stations. The trains here run every two minutes. Over 600 surveillance cameras are fitted both in the tunnel sections and at the stations. They are wirelessly connected to the operations control centre at the Collegno depot.

The extension of the current network will cover a length of 3.5km and include six stations. These are scheduled for opening in 2011. “The fact that Funkwerk plettac has once again received the contract for the system extension is evidence of the high level of customer satisfaction and the value that futureproof system solutions from Funkwerk plettac have for discerning customers,” says Gérard Monin, Managing Director at Funkwerk plettac and responsible for the video systems and property protection sector.
